Traditional artistic research (sonology): artist is involved as an expert for a medium

Academic expectation for artistic research: gain artists' visual expertise (in scientific visualizations etc.)

Problem: contemporary art no longer entails visual expertise, in the post-medium condition;

artists see artistic research as a way out of the dilemma of having no more medium/no more domain expertise; they are universal dilettantes; but their "pataphysical" artistic research is not what academia is looking for to collaborate with. 

In other terms: 

artistic research like Surrealism, Situationism, pataphysics, Acephale (which is where Jorn's term of artistic research actually comes from)

versus

artistic research like IRCAM, Natlab, media labs etc.
